Transcript #1: Interview with T.M. Revolution

Here's our first transcription, an interview with Takanori Nishikawa conducted by anime streaming website, Crunchyroll.  Please watch the video while trying to follow the Japanese (many of the 'um's, 'er's and incomplete sentences have been omitted for clarity).  There's a selection of useful expressions at the end of this post.

How does it feel to return to Otakon after 10 years?

本当に十年前よりもこんなにもまた大きく…すごくみんなは楽しんでくれるイベントになってるってことがすごく嬉しかったです。

I was really happy that it's become even bigger than 10 years ago and become an event that everybody enjoys so much.

How do North American fans compare to your fans in Japan/Asia?

やっぱり、僕もすごいやっぱり今FacebookだったりとかTwitterだったりとか。で、世界中のファンとダイレクトにコミュニケーション取ったりとか。そういうことが少しずつできるようになりましたけど、やっぱりそれでも、なかなかね、日本みたいになかなかもうみんなのところに頻繁になんとかね、コンサートに行ったりとか、みんなと会う機会っていうのはやっぱ少ないので、そういった意味でもやっぱり海外のファンのみんなは本当にみんな情熱的で嬉しいです。

Though I've been able to communicate directly with fans overseas via Facebook, Twitter and the like, I can't meet the fans like I'm able to in Japan, so it makes me happy to see how passionate they are.

 Are there any cities in America you would like to perform in?

そうですね。これまでロスアンジェルス、それからニューヨークあとボルチモアですよね。だから、本当にこうやってUSでもたくさんこうやってパフォーマンスできるってなったのはこの十年前のオタコンがスタートだったので、それでもこのボルチモア本当僕にとって特別な、オタコンはすごく特別なコンサートです。

I've performed in Los Angeles, New York and, of course, Baltimore.  Otakon of 10 years ago was the start of being able to perform in the US so Baltimore and the concert at Otakon are very special to me.

Have you had a chance to tour around Baltimore yet?

まだ全然。あの、昨日着いて、夜でもコンサートに少し行きました。あの、ジャスティンティンバレークとJay-Zのコンサートに行きましたけどね。でも朝今日起きてこの辺りをずっとランニングして、街をだから自分で走ってみて、その綺麗な本当にすごい。十年前に来た時はそんな時間もなかったので、今回は時間があったら、こうやってジョギングしたりとか、ランニングをしながら街をちょっとたくさん見たいと思ってます。

Not at all yet, though I did go to a Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z concert last night.  But, I woke up this morning and ran around the area by myself, it's beautiful.  I didn't have the time to do such things 10 years ago so, if there's time this year, I'd like to go jogging to see much more of the town.

Are there any American artists you would like to perform with?

どうだろう、お客になんかもし…逆に僕と一緒に何かやりたいと思ってくれる人をぜひウェブサイトで募集してみてください。やっぱ、そういうことをもっとたくさんこれからできたらいいなと思ってます。

Hmm, I wonder if there's anybody... But if there's anybody who'd like to perform with me then please try to recruit them through your website.  I'd like to start doing more things like that.

Which album is the most memorable one to you?

そうだなぁ。難しいけど…多分次、あの、これから作るアルバムが十枚目のアルバム。で多分それが本当にTMRも二十周年もうすぐあと三年で迎えるので、そこにかかる、あの、アルバムになってくるんだろうと思うので、次のアルバムがそうなればいいなと思っています。

Hmm, I wonder.  It's tricky but, probably... My next album will be my 10th album so, as we're approaching TMR's 20th anniversary, I imagine that that's the album that'll become most memorable to me.

Do you have a favourite anime series?

うわぁ、もう、むずかしいのばっかり。まぁ、いろんな本当にアニメーションがアニメが好きなんですけど、そんなかの一つだと攻殻機動隊の…そのシリーズがすごい好きで、今回ね菅野さんも作品のテーマソングっていうか、あれなんていえばいいんだろう。なんかそういう劇中音楽、そういう菅野陽子さんが今回ねゲストでオタコンにもゲストで来ていらっしゃる菅野さんがテーマソングをやられたりとかしていたので、その作品僕はもうすごく大好きな作品です。以前に菅野さんとコラボレーションしたこともあるんです。で、今はやっぱり今回このオタコンに来てこうやってさっきランニングしたり色々こう見てたりとかするとねやっぱり、進撃の巨人のコスチュームを着たりとかしてる人たちがたくさん見えたので、やっぱりこっちでも人気があるんだなって思いました。

Wow, nothing but tricky [questions]!  Well, I like several anime series but the one I really like is "Ghost in the Shell".  I really like the theme song or, rather, soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno, who's currently a guest here at Otakon and with whom I've once collaborated.  Also, as I've been running around Otakon, I've seen many people dressed in costumes from "Attack on Titan" so I thought it must be as popular here as in Japan.

Lastly, would you give a message to all our members?

どうもTMRです。こうやって本当に世界のみんなさんにまず僕の音楽を聴いてもらえてることをすごく嬉しく思っています。これからもまたもっともっとね海外のファンと会える機会をたくさん作っていきたいと思っているので、これからも応援してください。

I've picked out the following useful expressions.  Please add them to your vocabulary lists and practice using them in speech.  An effective technique is to set a one-minute stopwatch and talk about a subject chosen at random, trying to use as many new expressions as possible.

1. 本当に hontou ni - really (e.g. 本当に嬉しい hontou ni ureshii - really happy)
2. __ってことが嬉しい __tte koto ga ureshii - I'm happy that __
3. __たりとか __tari toka - such as __ing (e.g. __行ったりとか __ittari toka - such as going to __)
4. そういう意味でも sou iu imi demo - in that sense
5. こうやって kou yatte - in this way
6. 時間があったら jikan ga attara - if there's time
7. そういうこと sou iu koto - that kind of thing
8. __たらいいなと思ってます __tara ii na to omottemasu - I hope that __ (e.g. __できたらいいなと思ってます __dekitara ii na to omottemasu - I hope that I'm able to __)
9. っていうか tte iu ka - or rather
10. なんていえばいいんだろう nante ieba ii n darou - how do I put this (when talking to self)
